The U.S. Vinyl Industry’s Sustainability Initiative Is Rooted in Past Innovations

Image
The U.S. vinyl industry is engaged in a comprehensive, sustainability strategy that began in 2016 with the formation of the  Vinyl Business and Sustainability Council  and the launch of a  materiality assessment  to obtain an overall snapshot of stakeholder perceptions about how the industry is doing in the environmental, social, and economic spheres—and where it can do better. While attention is being put on this and other current sustainability initiatives, what often gets overlooked is that the U.S. vinyl industry has in fact been focused on driving innovation and sustainability for almost 50 years. Here’s a snapshot of that effort and the results that came about in reducing emissions, eliminating harmful chemicals, and making workers safer. A Culture of Safety Resin production has increased significantly since the 1970s – and yet, at the same time, emissions have been reduced and on-the-job health and safety has been strengthened considerably. In fact, many resin manufactu

Shed a Little Light!

Image
Light has the largest impact on color and one cannot exist without the other. A c olor hue looks different depending on the light that it's exposed to. Here’s the tricky part! Light is never consistent and how it shines depends entirely on time, season’s change and context. For instance, recessed lighting, at night on full blast, has a completely different appearance than a couple of lights softly flickering. The human eye interprets color by the amount of light that the color absorbs or reflects. In fact, if you painted your family room the same color as the kitchen, the color may look completely different in each room depending on the amount of light available. Amazingly enough, the appearance of c olor even changes if your room faces North, South, East or West. North and East facing rooms tend to be darker and cooler because they get less sunlight, whereas South and West facing rooms tend to be warmer. Get this! The appearance of color even changes throughout

Tuesday Motivation: New Brands On The Block

Image
Crafting the look behind today’s chicest just-launched flags means leading, not following. Three buzzy brands offer a master class. Show and tell. That’s the memo for any designer trying to capture the attention of the “millennial-minded” guest who’s become the avatar for lifestyle hotel lovers across the globe. They’re not brand loyal, and their idea of great design is design they like. Period. There’s no point trying to chase after what they like, so designers need to take the risks to play visual concierge and come up with a look guests don’t even know they want—yet. Here’s how, according to the brands that are going there and doing that. Walking on the dark side in JO&JOE's Together room proves black walls aren't just for theaters. Image: Courtesy of AccorHotels/JO&JOE Hyatt Centric There’s a long lineage of major chains wanting—and getting—into the lifestyle sector. They’ve taken the best of the edge independent hotels offer and married it to the convenienc

The Do's and Don'ts When Using Color

Image
By Denise Turner, ASID,CID CMG ColorTurners.com   The key to any great creative endeavor has always been to learn the rules before you can break them. Sometimes you can have beginner ’ s luck and a project can turn out fine. More often than not though, without a basic understanding of color and design, an innocent idea can be a costly mistake that you have to live with.  The good news is that once you understand the basics, you can customize these for your own rooms. Here are some basic “ Dos and Don ’ts” when using color: ~ DON’T   be afraid to express yourself with color. If you absolutely love lime green, then work it into your color scheme. It can be a great accent color. If you simply must have that 1970s retro, upholstered chair in hues of orange and olive green, then surround it with colors that complement it. If you don ’ t feel bold enough to paint an eggplant accent wall, you can always use that color to paint an accent table. ~ DO consider your home ’ s
