Friday Fun: Volkshotel

Image
Once a newspaper headquarters, the Volkshotel is now a 172 room hotel in Amsterdam that has rooms ranging from small and cozy to large and inviting. While the majority of the rooms are standard and conventional, nine of the rooms have been designed by architects and interior designers that each feature unique details and themes. Here’s a closer look at all nine rooms…  1. You Are Here This room concept was created by Swaantje Nijkamp, Linde Ex and Ella Gil and designed by Elwin van Heyningen. The futuristic room lights up in a number of different ways ranging from a simple illuminated bed to a full on neon party. The room also features an interactive map on the wall that allows you to select a point on it and have footage from that place be projected onto your walls. 2. Cabin in the Woods As its name suggests, this room, designed by Gabor Disberg , was created for those who love nature. The bed sits in a treehouse or cabin-like structure, there’s a hammock with cozy

Industry News: Reviewing Industry Trends with Motovicity's CEO

Image
Fresh off a long drive in a customized 1965 Plymouth Fury on the HOT ROD Power Tour, Brian Lounsberry—CEO of Motovicity—devoted a large chunk of a late-June day to an interview with THE SHOP magazine. The conversation covered a large range of topics—so many, in fact, that our staff felt it necessary to divide the Q&A into a series of three separate parts. The first part, presented below, is dedicated to trends currently seen in the performance industry, car market, and in two-step distribution. Parts two and three of the Lounsberry interview, to be published at a later date, will delve deeper into shop trends and what's new at Motovicity. Lounsberry was named CEO of the Madison Heights, Michigan-based performance distributor late in 2016 after 11 years served with the company (he's now in year 12). His truly unique perspective, however, comes from the 13 years he spent working in an aftermarket shop prior to starting with Motovicity. Below, we discuss what's goi

Wednesday Wisdom: Keemala Hotel

Image
Just in case you saw the opening photo and needed to be reassured: YES, the Keemala is a real place. This modern hotel nestled in the lush Kathu District in Phuket, Thailand seems like a scene from an enchanting storybook fairytale, and that’s because it was in part designed to be that way. The team behind the creation of Keemala divided the property into four different grounds for four different clans of fictitious ancient Phuket settlers, with each ground differing in architecture and lifestyle.   The ‘Pa-Ta-Pea’ clan inhabits the 16 Clay Pool Cottages and are characterized by their down-to-earth sensibility and connection to agriculture. Thus, as a direct reflection, the interiors of the cottages are warm, sturdy, and earth-toned.   The ‘Khon-Jorn’ clan was made up of explorers who led a nomadic lifestyle, so their 7 Tent Pool Villas were semi-permanent for easy transport. Inside, forms of wildlife and textures inspired by their travels fill the rooms.

Friday Fun: Playful Seating Ispired by Log Cabins

Image
Do you remember Lincoln Logs from when you were a kid? That’s what immediately comes to mind, well that and log cabins, when taking a look at the Cabin Lounges from DesignByThem . Sarah Gibson & Nicholas Karlovasitis , who go by GibsonKarlo, are the founders of DesignByThem and their latest release features armchairs , lounges , ottomans , and a booth , all of which look as though they were built as a log cabin, hence their name. Each of the pieces is made of a series of upholstered “log” modules that stack in an intersecting pattern, much like the way a log cabin is constructed.   The idea began as a series of cylinders from a deconstructed cabin, which they arranged to create various types of seating. They experimented to get the diameter of the cylinders correct to maximize comfort for the back and armrests.
