Balancing Room Colors: The 60-30-10 Design Rule

Image
Designing with color is as simple as 60-30-10. Don’ t take our word for it! Just look at any award-winning design; 9 times out of 10 the design will be divided into these percentages. This tried and true design rule will make your color choices so easy that you’ll wonder why everyone else doesn ’ t follow it. Here’s how to use the 60-30-10 rule 60% Is the dominant color that anchors the space and serve as a backdrop for other items. Most likely the 60% in a family room would be the walls and ceiling, large accent pieces such as a sectional and area rug. (White walls in above photo for example) 30% Is the secondary color and you’ll be using half as much of this color, as the dominate color. The secondary color supports the dominate color, but is different enough to set them apart and provide visual interest in the room . Most likely the 30% can be window coverings, painted furniture, flooring, accent chairs and bed linens. (Yellow furniture in

Monday Motivation: Tech Talk

Image
An ongoing tidal wave of technology is powering up mind-boggling additions to the toolkit designers can use to shape hotels. Every day, it seems, a new tech wrinkle is being introduced into hotels: Artwork hanging on walls that changes daily, thanks to the use of “digital canvasses;” corridor lighting schemes that evolve as the day progresses (light and bright in the morning; soft and soothing in the evening); and voice-activated systems that allow guests to dial down the air conditioning when the room feels too hot or to turn on the lights before getting out of bed. Those aren’t paintings hanging on the wall of this lounge area within the Sofitel Los Angeles at Beverly Hills hotel. They’re “digital canvasses” created by Daylighted. The images on the screens can be changed at will—and reproductions can be ordered on the adjoining touchscreen. Photo: Courtesy of Daylighted These installations aren’t sci-fi, they’re real time: the digital canvasses are in place at the Sofitel Los

Debunked! Color Myths

Image
Who would ever guess, that something as small as an innocent paint chip, would have the ability stir up our deepest emotions. Color can! It has the power to push our emotional buttons faster, than any other design element.  Everyone has their opinions about color, and no one's shy about sharing them. As a color expert, product designer and Certified Interior Designer, God knows, I’ve heard them all. Whether trying to convince you that a yellow nursery will make your baby cry more or a red kitchen will wreak havoc on your waist line, or a blue bedroom will help you to sleep better. Is there any truth behind these myths? Well…Yes and no. Allow me to explain. Sense the right colors can increase sales, improve brand recognition and maximize employees’ productivity, and the wrong colors can cost business money, I use every trick in the bag. Such as, design trends, Color Psychology, Color Philosophy and Color Therapy— all to enhance my clients’ competitive edge. Color

Vinyl is Fed Up!

VINYL DEFENDS ITS SAFETY AND VALUE PROPOSITION  From fabrics to water pipes, vinyl takes aim at myths and false statements CORONA, CA (MARCH 2017 )-- Enduratex has joined forces with the CFFA (Chemical Fabrics and Film Association) and Vinyl Verified, a vinyl advocacy group to set the record straight and ensure that the public understands the benefits of vinyl, according to Jeff Post, VP and General Manager of Enduratex™. For decades, and with various claims, numerous groups have disparaged vinyl products with misleading myths and false statements.  It almost could be humorous if the accusations weren’t so blatantly untrue.  Consider this, when water pipes are found with corrosion, and health concerns such as lead in water become the reality, the fix is clear, get rid of the disease producing pipes and replace them with…vinyl pipes.  This is why today’s gold standard for transporting safe drinking water to our kitchens is PVC pipes.  Likewise, when emergency response t
