Monday Motivation: Dark Star

Image
By   Oriana Lerner of Boutique Design Studio MODE's Svetoslav Todorov makes black-and-white thinking the foundation for full-spectrum drama in immersive nightclubs. Guests looking for a focal point in Sofia, Bulgaria’s Club Mascara (located in the basement of the building that houses the city’s opera and ballet and bearing a name derived from the idea of masked characters in those performances) won’t need to go ask Alice for directions. Even though Lewis Carroll’s classic book inspired the space, Sofia-based Studio MODE founder Svetoslav Todorov distilled that outsize vision board into a slick space that’s far from any rabbit hole. All that glitters in Flash Club, Bansko, Bulgaria, isn't gold—it's a sparkling reflection of a camera flash. Photo: Tihomir Rachev “Being too literal is always a road leading to failure,” he says. “I do not believe in this approach; it is against my ideology for design.”   Sofia's Club Mascara gives the ceiling a star turn. Monday Motivation: A Day at the Spa, Doctor's Orders

Image
"I love going to the doctor’s office.” Unless you’re a medical provider that loves his or her job, you won’t hear those words from anyone else—especially not patients. The reception and lobby areas combine color, texture, and multiple seating options from Coalesse to create a relaxing, hospitality-inspired waiting experience. But what if the medical facility where you sought treatment looked and felt more like a spa than a clinic? Although it may not alleviate all of the stress associated with treating physical ailments and diseases, a well-designed healthcare environment that emulates the tranquility of a spa would go a long way in helping patients relax and actually become more proactive about their health. Patients receive robes instead of hospital gowns while they wait in a private dressing room to be led to their appointments. That was both the goal and the end-result of HMC Architects’ design for the Los Angeles Center for Women’s Health, which has become a

Wednesday Wisdom: Making a Vinyl Belt Out of Scrap Material

Image
If you're like me, then you hate to see good material go to waste. Unfortunately, in the textile industry, we end up with a good amount of scrap material. However, there is always a good project in scrap material. This avoids waste and, ultimately, can promote your brand using your very own product. Running with Scissors has a DIY craft that can utilize those scrap materials; vinyl belts. Article by Jessica and Lynette Kelly from Running with Scissors: I love belts, and I’ve been wanting to have a few colorful ones in the mix, but not wanting to spend $10+ for a belt that isn’t going to be worn often.  It’s a simple accessory but can add a lot to an outfit and so today I’ll show you how I made a bright orange belt for my son. For $1.50 this belt was easy, quick and simple to sew. Supplies:  thrifted belt, vinyl strip, snap pliers, needle & thread Instructions: I started off with a $0.50 ordinary belt from the thrift store.   You can buy belt hardware in th

The Vinyl Voyage

Image
This fall, designers have zeroes in on one word: plastics. More specifically, PVC or vinyl through a variety of looks. Vinyl, like many other great inventions, was discovered by accident. in 1926, a scientist working for GF Goodrich, Waldo L. Semon, created different compounds while trying to form a synthetic rubber. At first, he thought that the rubbery gel that he had created would work as a bonding agent to adhere rubber to metal, however, through further experimentation, he found out that he had invented a highly versatile plasticised vinyl that, in the 21st century has thousands of uses. Astonished by the versatility, Waldo, later on, applied the gel to curtains and hence the world's first waterproof vinyl-coated shower curtain came to be. Soon, vinyl was adapted to umbrella and raincoat fabrics for its waterproof properties. During World War II, it was turned to wartime use but it wasn't until the 1960's that vinyl became a fashion commodity. “André Co

Philippe Starck Puts His Incredible Stamp on the Inaugural M Social Hotel

Image
Like virtually every other hotelier in the world, Millennium Hotels and Resorts has created a new brand designed to attract the “millennial-mindset” guest. So, to stand out from the crowd, Millennium made two strategic choices for its new M Social brand: locate its inaugural flagship within a high-profile sector of Singapore, and hire iconoclastic designer Philippe Starck to create its interiors. Millennium representatives say they chose Singapore for M Social's debut in part because that bustling city-state is home to the hotelier’s parent company, City Development Ltd. Indeed, the breadth of the Millennium line is well represented in Singapore, where it operates six properties: the Copthorne Kings Hotel; the Grand Copthorne Waterfront; the Orchard Hotel Singapore; an M Hotel; a Studio M Hotel; and now, the M Social (the latter, a member of Millennium's Leng's Collection soft brand, is located in the city’s trendy Robertson Quay neighborhood). Starck stuffed the vis
