Carlos Serra Designs Tropical Restaurant in Valencia

In collaboration with designer Carlos Serra, Valencia, Spain-based architecture firm Mercader de Indias has unveiled the designs for the Valencia restaurant Tropical. Mirroring the blue waters of the Mediterranean Sea, blue palm trees frame the restaurant. Flooded with light and warmth, the restaurant boasts large windows offering shimmering views of the ocean.

Emulating clouds, the Mallorquinas roofing filters in light through wooden slats, manipulating light and shadow in a manner similar to that of sun. The columns also reflect light through slats. Hydraulic tile breaks, a motif in designs throughout the region, span an array of blue shades to form a large format shelf illuminated by two restored vintage lamps.

The prominent bar draws its form from the waves of the sea, adorned with enameled white lava. Suspended above is a rustic boat navigating the waves, a theme which is further perpetuated thanks to traditional Mediterranean upholstery-clad seating.
