Crossover Skills Give Upholsterers Business Opportunities in Many Markets

Image
Th e president of the Professional Upholsterers’ Association of Minnesota proudly states that she was the fifth woman to graduate from an upholstery curriculum at Minneapolis Technical College in 1977.   “It was considered a man’s field back then,” says Diana Shroyer Guenther, owner of Shroyer Custom Upholstery in Coon Rapids, Minn. She worked one year for the program’s third woman graduate before starting her own home-based business. She subsequently worked for a furniture manufacturer, a foam and upholstery company and a restaurant booth manufacturer before her recent semi-retirement that sees her back on her own footing with residential, boat and small commercial jobs.   “When I started in the business, reupholstering cost less or the same as buying new. Now, with the economical lines of furniture, it often costs more than buying new, unless you are comparing it to upper-end, quality furniture lines,” Guenther says. “The clients we have know the value of...

Wednesday Wisdom: FORBID SRT

Image
Award-winning Forbid SRT changed the vinyl game back in 2013. This superior stain resistant topcoat was an answer to the problem of vinyl upholstery staining and ghosting. When Forbid SRT was released, we put the topcoat on some of our most popular lines: Independence, Predictions, and Prizm. Its performance was enough to turn heads and it began to generate a snowball effect of popularity.   Forbid SRT has the right chemistry to resist stains, some so daring they were once thought to be permanent. However, with either just a wash of soap and water or a wipe of 70 percent isopropyl alcohol Forbid SRT has repeatedly proven itself and customers regularly ask for it by name. In fact, since its introduction, Forbid SRT has been added to 28 different product lines. Although Forbid SRT is not found on every line, we do provide other topcoat products such as Produratect ™ and Produratect C. One size doesn't fit all and topcoats are not created equal. Each Enduratex t...

Industry News: Hear from Environmentalist Patrick Moore on his Evolution to Pro-Vinyl

Image
J oin colleagues from across the vinyl value chain to hear from Vinyl360 keynote speaker Dr. Patrick Moore, also world renowned as the " Sensible Environmentalist !" A co-founder of Greenpeace, Moore left the organization due to their non-scientific and aggressive campaign to ban chlorine world-wide. Made from chlorine, Moore calls vinyl “the most important plastic of all the plastics used in building” and considers vinyl one of the most beneficial and sustainable materials used for a multitude of applications that benefit human kind. While Greenpeace positions vinyl as the “single most environmentally damaging type of plastic” and chlorine as “the devil’s element,” conversely, Moore argues that chlorine is the most important element on the periodic table for public health, medicine, safe drinking water, and preventing the spread of disease because of its ability to eliminate bacteria. Moore also argues that “vinyl workers have lower injuries and illnesses ...

What is TPO?

Image
Overshadow is Enduratex's first combination TPO fabric with a PU topskin. T hermoplastic Olefins, commonly known as TPO, have been used for years. Due to its high abrasion resistance, cold control, durability, and flexibility TPO products have previously been mostly common used in roofing material. Now as trends change, certain upholstery markets have requested the use of TPO type products. Moving from a predominantly roofing material to a textile doesn't happen overnight.   As TPO has experienced a slower start into the upholstery industry than Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC), the long standing leader of the upholstery business, and Polyurethane (PU) which have been part of the vinyl conversation for many years, it is important to get acquainted with TPO and its qualities. To get started, here are some brief overview of PVC, PU, and TPO: Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): a commodity resin with unsurpassed physical characteristics used for many purposes such as pipe, blood bags...

Wednesday Wisdom: Closing the Loop

Image
Closing the Loop: Long-Term Sustainability Strategies for Textile Manufacturers Textile manufacturers are deploying sustainability strategies and forming partnerships to green up products and processes. This helps manufacturers meet the requirements of even the most eco-concerned customers—and get a good start on the circular economy of the future. For most manufacturers, eco-friendly, sustainable products are becoming a competitive necessity. And as concern over environmental issues has become entrenched among even the most mainstream of consumers, attention is spreading beyond the products themselves to how they’re being produced. In fact, involving the entire supply chain is a key sustainability trend, according to Karla Magruder, founder of Fabrikology International. Based in Hoboken, N.J., the company provides consulting services to the textile supply chain, focusing on sustainable education, development and material sourcing. “Knowledge is growing,” says Magruder. “F...
