Monday Motivation: Hotel William Gray

Image
by Will Speros from Hospitality Design The hotel’s eight-story glass tower is flanked by the Maison Edward-William Gray and Maison Cherrier, two buildings first constructed in the 18th century. Located steps away from Montreal’s famed Place Jacques-Cartier and Old Port, two 18th-century structures—Maison Edward-William Gray and Maison Cherrier—have been crowned with an eight-story glass tower by local firm Béïque Legault Thuot Architectes (BLTA) to create the Hotel William Gray.  The design honors Montreal’s artisan community with chic industrial elements like the reception desk cut from  natural stone. The lobby features a series of small living rooms decked out with eclectic seating. Inside, the warm, residential atmosphere by local studio CAMDI Design aptly draws its spirit from Old Montreal and its unique community of artisans—think wood, brick, leather, stone, and bookshelves filled with unique finds. “The diversity in furniture and spaces allows visitors to r...

Monday Motivation: Midcentury Meets Mediterranean at La Sirena in NYC

Image
Finding restaurants with large, comfortable alfresco dining spaces in New York City is no small task. So when word leaked that La Bottega, an Italian restaurant fronted by an expansive outdoor plaza at the Maritime Hotel, would be closing,  Batali & Bastianich Hospitality Group  (B&BHG) jumped at the opportunity.  The 38-foot-long white quartz bar connects the two dining rooms. The bar area was created by enclosing what was formerly part of the outdoor plaza.   Photo by Kate Previte Helmed by culinary celebrities Mario Batali and Joe Bastianich, B&BHG signed the lease and spent more than a year converting La Bottega into a chic, contemporary home for their new Mediterranean concept. Opened last February,  La Sirena  is the first new restaurant by B&BHG in 10 years, and their first in a hotel. Located in Manhattan’s Chelsea neighborhood, the operation is large — nearly 15,000 square feet in all. It spans two main dining rooms that seat ...

How Designers Are Rethinking Classrooms and Other School Spaces

Image
Education is ripe for innovation. Whether it’s how we teach kids in K-12 or how higher education is preparing students to tackle 21st century challenges, there’s been a lot of focus in the past couple of years around education. Reform, revamp, rework –  rethink . Take for example a recent opinion piece in the  Tallahassee Democrat  entitled “Design and Environment Important to School Success.” The author, an educator, wrote: “It often seems that the architecture of a public school and its surrounding environment are given very little thought, as if it really doesn’t matter. Teach in a gravel pit, teach in a barn, teach in an auditorium, teach in a warehouse, teach in a cozy room with a fireplace, it’s all the same. Well, it is not all the same.” Which brings me to Design Connections – Education.  Last month’s conference was squarely focused on the future of schools’ design. How should today’s schools be structured? What makes for an effective classr...

Architects and Designers Satisfaction with Vinyl Is Up 20 Percent

Image
Satisfaction with vinyl and vinyl applications is up over 20 percent since 2010 amongst architects and interior designers. According to a research study by Accountability Information Management, architects said that they are 15 percent more satisfied with vinyl today, and interior designers said they are 28 percent more satisfied. Sustainability is key. Vinyl’s sustainability registered the greatest increase in satisfaction – up 30 percent. Architects and designers also said they are more satisfied with vinyl’s impact on the environment and its ability to meet their clients’ needs. Architects and designers are generally very satisfied, and they are using vinyl building products, including flooring, wallcovering, upholstery and more. They use it because: It’s durable and performs well over time. It’s easy to maintain/clean. It’s less expensive than many alternatives. It does not rust or corrode. Image
To celebrate our official move, this weeks Monday Motivation come from our very own HQ. We still have a few things to get done in our new office before we can comfortable post more photos, but we thought we would share the look of our new seating area for our lobby. As you can see above, this seating area features two arm chairs and a couch centered around tapered glass tables sitting on a rug made completely of different blue jean pieces. Forbid is a stain resistant topcoat, the best in the industry. The quality that people love about Forbid the most is the fact that is makes blue jean stains a thing of the past.  Our couch, that comfortably seats three people, features our Beach Pebble color from our Coastal Ranch line.
